Movie Clips Review
The two movie clips I chose are quite opposite from each other. The first one I chose was a scene from Drumline, and the other one that I chose was from the movie Bad Teacher. They are very different in the sense that in drumline a student is helping another student by teaching him how to read notes and in Bad Teacher the teacher is not doing a good job of helping the students in anyway, she just wants to get something out of it for herself.
I chose these clips because of how different they were and how they showcased two different sides of teaching, one being good and very helpful and the other not so much. What I wanted to come out of comparing the two is that there will be bad teachers and good teachers and you just have to know right from wrong. Also, how it’s not supposed to be about the teacher and what they gain from it. It’s what the students learn from it and how they apply it to the real world.
From Drumline, I thought it was a good example of teaching because even though it wasn’t a teacher trying to help the main character, he was still helping him in a way where it seemed like he could have been the teacher. I felt like he had a different approach to how to teach the main character to learn to read sheet music and rhythms.
From Bad Teacher, I thought it was a bad example of teaching (hence the name of the movie) because she only cared about the outcome for her. The teacher just wanted to quickly make them learn the things so they would do well on a test so she could get the prize money. She was mean to them when teaching them and it is not the way to get through to the students and they wouldn’t retain the information that was being given.

Leslie Dawe Interview
I really enjoyed listening to Leslie Dawe speak to us the other day. She gave some insightful things during the interview which I really liked. I thought that she explained everything from her article very well. I am glad she took time out of her busy day to talk to us.
When she was talking about her teaching experiences it was a good insight on what might happen to myself or anyone else in that room that decides to pursue a career in music education. I thought she had a lot of stories that are great to remember and how she told us how to handle things like that. I am just wondering if things will be different for us when we start. For us, will we have to face new challenges? Will we still be dealing with some of the things that she has gone through?
Another thing that I liked was the fact that she told us what she does within her class. I liked her teaching methods of letting the students choose what they want to play because it gives them room to grow and be creative on their instruments. With letting them do that, does she run into the problem of the students choosing songs that are too hard for them? Do they perform the songs at the end in some sort of recital in the class? How does all of that work?
All in all, I enjoyed her interview and I would actually like for her to create another article about her teaching now, as like an add on to the first article.

Dr. Bradley Interview
The interview with Dr. Bradley was one that I really enjoyed. She was very interactive with all of us and made we felt included. She knew what she was talking about and I liked the fact that she knew about it all.
I quite enjoyed the part where we got to sing the song that they sung during the civil rights movement. It has a lot of meaning and I was glad to be able to learn more about it. I was glad also to watch the video of other people singing it too.
This topic interests me because I want to be an activist within the classroom and the community. I don’t want to wait around for someone else to do it for me or help people without me. I would rather do it myself and then have people around me help. I think Dr. Bradley helped with that a little bit in the sense now I can see stuff like this in the classroom and I can try and change that.
Her interview was inspiring for me and I wish I was able to stay for the entire thing but sadly I had to be somewhere else at that time.

Elementary School Visit
Going to St. George Elementary school was a good experience I think for the kids and ourselves. All the activities we did were a lot of fun. The kids seemed to really enjoy the fact that we were there doing things with them.
The activities we did were enjoyable for both the little ones and us. We got to help them out and talk to them and ask them questions about what we were talking about. The human orchestra game is always a fun one to do, I quite like that one to play. It was nice to see the little ones wanting to be the conductor and really were into it. All the Halloween themed songs were very interesting honestly. I thought at some points they were a little too much in the sense that these children are in 3rd and 4th grade and are singing about a sparrow who killed another bird and then a fish is catching the blood in a dish. The song were fine and the teacher seemed fine with it, but just for me I thought it was at some points a little over the top. The snap, clap, pat, stomp game was a lot of fun. It was even a little challenging for the university students to get the correct word out. It was fun either way though and the little ones liked that one a lot as well.
All in all, it was a fun hour that was spent at an elementary school and honestly I would like to do that again sometime and really be able to get to know those kids. They all seemed very sweet and kind.
